Aonuma is still excited to work with the Zelda team and Miyamoto

It’s been more than two decades of Eiji Aonuma working on the Legend of Zelda series, and he was able to chat with Game Informer at E3 2019 about this and working with Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto.

With regard to how his workload and position have changed, you can look to the credits for the first indication of Aonuma’s growth to head of the Zelda series — first as a director from Ocarina of Time up to Twilight Princess, then as a producer and supervisor for following titles. Up until Breath of the Wild, Aonuma was even the dungeon designer. But now, he’s able to take a step back and delegate work to his team.

“One thing that definitely has changed is that in the beginning, I had to create a bunch of things on my own, but now I have a great team with great people with different skills to help me create things together.”

Given Aonuma’s position with Nintendo and the Zelda series,  he obviously needs to work and communicate regularly with Producer Shigeru Miyamoto. With this in mind, it’s great to hear that after 20 years, Aonuma is still delighted that he gets to collaborate with Miyamoto.

“It’s very interesting that you bring up Mr. Miyamoto. I’ve never thought of it as collaborating with him! Now that you’ve phrased it that way, I think, ‘Oh, working with Mr. Miyamoto is a collaboration.’ That’s kind of exciting!”
