After the success of two Super Mario movie installments, a third unnamed collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination is currently scheduled for 2028.
The untitled animated film was discovered in an official Universal Pictures Spain release schedule document and is currently dated for April 12, 2028. Here’s an excerpt from the document:

Nintendo and Illumination have had a successful partnership so far. The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed $1.36 billion worldwide, with April’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie closing in on the $1 billion milestone as well. The untitled 2028 movie would be Nintendo and Illumination’s third movie collaboration, and Nintendo’s fourth movie overall in the modern era, with The Legend of Zelda move slated for release on April 30, 2027.
In a recent interview, Toad voice actor Keegan-Michael Key teased a 2029 third installment for the Super Mario series, making the 2028 movie a mystery for the time being. One option for the film could be a Donkey Kong movie, as Nintendo filed a patent for a Donkey Kong motion picture in June 2025. Given the recent release of Donkey Kong Bananza and the character’s absence from The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it seems likely that we may see DK star in his own movie in 2028.
Regardless of what the movie is, the 2028 film will mark the continued partnership between Nintendo and Illumination and another step in Nintendo’s expansion into the film industry.
