Medli’s Melodies: Harmonious Outset

I’ve loved Rozen’s wonderful reimagining of Zelda music since the very first time I heard “May We Meet Again,” a wonderfully touching medley from Skyward Sword greatly inspired by “Fi’s Farewell”. In his latest album, Ballads of Hyrule II, many wonderful tunes from The Wind Waker, Skyward Sword, and Breath of the Wild have been added to the ever-growing collection of Zelda compositions, and I am absolutely delighted that one of my favorite themes has been included.

I’ve always enjoyed the “Outset Island” theme because it’s so undeniably happy and upbeat. I’ve always been drawn to these sorts of tunes, as the bounciness is always able to lift my spirits and distract me from the worries in my life. I suppose, in a way, that could describe the island itself, being a relatively carefree place to live before the events of The Wind Waker occurred.

This cover perfectly encapsulates that feeling of a peaceful place, but also one brimming with life as the percussion and bass pick up. I can imagine the children of the island chasing around the pigs and jumping on the rocky platforms that peek out of the sea as the playful woodwinds flutter about. The guitar gives it a folksy feeling too, reminding me of the elders who guide the younger folks on the island. The marching beat of the snare as Aryll’s motif plays is very reminiscent of our hero, on a quest to save his beloved sister and stepping in time to the beat of his destiny.

Overall, what I think I’m trying to say is, what I love most about this piece is that it feels like a celebration of the island. With so many different and unique instruments in perfect harmony, it is just like Outset. There are many unique individuals that make up the small community, all coming together to bring their unique skills together to assist one another and live in peace and happiness.
