I was already shocked by the announcement and eventual release of the original Hyrule Warriors. A dream come true for someone like me who loves the Warriors games and the Zelda franchise, it was the mashup I never knew I wanted or needed in my life.
Once Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was announced I was on an adrenaline rush the entire day. Now there’s a mashup of Warriors-style gameplay and the aesthetic and world of Breath of the Wild?! The hype for this cannot be contained!
As tends to be the case when a new Zelda is announced, I end up wanting to go back and play some old classics or newer titles. In this case, it obviously made me go back and play Hyrule Warriors and I immediately started having a blast. The music in the game also got me pumped and ready to take on all the hordes of enemies, as a good Warriors soundtrack will do.
The remix of Skyloft in Hyrule Warriors is probably one of my favorite songs on the soundtrack. While I don’t dislike the original Skyloft theme from Skyward Sword or anything, I also didn’t find it all that great; it was simply a song I found to just be OK. This remix, however, has me constantly tapping my foot to the beat.
The song has a pretty good start, but once the song picks up at 13 seconds in, I can’t help but bang my head a little. After a while, a flute begins to play the main portion of the original song, and this is perhaps one of the only times I know of where a flute can work super well with a rock song. There’s a nice blend of the traditional mixed with that heavy rock from the Warriors games, and it creates a unique tune that works extremely well for the context of the game.
I’m very glad that Nintendo is handing over the reins to more developers with their franchises to make unique spin-off titles. Zelda games, though they’ve been relatively formulaic until Breath of the Wild, are always trying new things or changing things up. Having a spin-off like this adds more to the franchise and is an excellent game in its own right. This is to say nothing of the amazing music tracks, such as “Skyloft,” which was so good I had a hard time writing this article because the song itself made me want to drum my fingers on my desk!
