Medli’s Melodies: Playing jazz in the falling rain

When I was younger, I was a part of my school’s band. I played the clarinet and I played it proud. I started back in fifth grade and I stuck with it all the way until I graduated high school. For a very long time, I listened exclusively to video game soundtracks or rock music, as I was raised on both.

It was thanks to band, however, that I learned to love jazz.

You’d best believe once my love for jazz clicked that I looked up some smooth remixes of video game music, and obviously this includes The Legend of Zelda. One of my favorite remixes I’ve found is performed by The OneUps which is a remix of the excellent “Time of the Falling Rain” from A Link to the Past.

The song itself starts out surprisingly chipper despite the source material being very serious and intense. It works really well though, and it gets your foot tapping to the beat for sure. Towards the end of the song, however, it takes a turn and some strings come in.

The song becomes a lot more urgent and very slightly unsettling. I wasn’t expecting it the first time I heard the song, but it really shows off the creativity of the arrangement all the while fitting in well with both the remix and the source material. I’m also impressed at how they managed to take such a short piece and turn it into a five-minute song.

Like many I’d imagine, I like to listen to music just to either zone out or get lost in the song. The thing I love about jazz is how you can really listen to it in many ways; from smooth jazz or even blues. The rendition of a very good track from A Link to the Past is an amazing rendition and I urge everyone to give it a listen. If you’re not into jazz, then hey, why not give it a try? You might just find a new genre of music you never knew you liked.
