Nintendo’s games are known for Easter eggs and references to other franchises, but Link’s Awakening in particular stands out for the sheer number of cameos. It sports a multitude of Mario characters and enemies, along with nods to Kirby and SimCity, to name a few. Naturally, fans have been wondering if the cameos will reappear and luckily, a recent Game Informer interview with Eiji Aonuma confirms many will.
Aonuma explicitly stated all Mario characters will return, but interestingly enough, he also cryptically added regarding other cameos we’d “just have to play and find out.” Aonuma is notorious for being coy about features in upcoming Zelda games, so it’s no surprise he’d want to keep some secrets until we’re playing it ourselves.
Considering Nintendo’s keen eye for detail, I’d be surprised if the other cameos were absent, but time will tell. The real question is if references to other franchises will be added to the remake.
