When Nintendo unveiled its in-development sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, its dark tones had fans quickly drawing comparisons with Majora’s Mask, the direct sequel to Ocarina of Time which was notably darker than its predecessor. Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma has come out and stated that the sequel is not related to or inspired by Majora’s Mask, and is actually somewhat darker than the 2000 Nintendo 64 classic.
“The new Breath of the Wild or the sequel to it, it’s not necessarily going to be related to Majora’s Mask or inspired by it… What we showed you currently is a little darker,” said Aonuma today during an interview with IGN.
The trailer for the sequel shows Link and Zelda exploring an underground cavern where malevolent forces abound, and the re-animation of a mummified corpse that bears a striking resemblance to our good friend Ganondorf.
