Nintendo explains why the Breath of the Wild sequel’s title has not been revealed

Despite all of the new details revealed during E3 about the Breath of the Wild sequel, we are apparently still in the dark about enough of the game that Nintendo believes even the name would spoil things they do not want us to know, according to a recent IGN interview.

After the big Nintendo Direct, IGN sat down for an interview with Bill Trinen and Nate Bihldorff from the Nintendo Treehouse to discuss the announcements from the presentation, which of course included the Breath of the Wild sequel. During the interview, Trinen confirmed that the anticipated game has a title but it can not be revealed yet. “Those subtitles… they start to give little bits of hints about maybe what’s going to happen.”

While this is disappointing, it is also understandable. Titles always reveal a key aspect of the media it represents, and this is especially true among Zelda titles. Twilight Princess refers to Midna, The Wind Waker refers to the baton and importance of the wind, and Oracle of Seasons refers to Din. The core identity of these games is wrapped up in the title, and the title would make no sense without knowing what it is referencing.

However, this really does beg the question: What is the core identity of the Breath of the Wild sequel? During the trailer, the game seemed to be heavily sky themed, but it’s possible that the title or the overall theme is not related specifically to the sky or the title would not be a spoiler. Could it be related to Link’s new powers, Zelda’s role in the game, the mysterious mummy, or something entirely new we haven’t seen? At this point, we know nothing besides there is still a lot to learn.
