On a special interview concerning the Fire Emblem series, titled Making of Fire Emblem: 25 Years of Development Secrets, Masahiro Sakurai unveiled some info regarding the next installment of the Super Smash Bros. series, and that is that he is unsure if there will be a next installment at all.
During the interview, Sakurai was asked about the inclusion of Fire Emblem characters Lucina and Corrin, both of whom were added to the roster around their games’ release dates. Sakurai explained, “It’s not as if we have a stipulation that says, ‘We have to include the protagonist of the next Fire Emblem game,'” before adding, “Moreover, we don’t even know if there’ll be another Smash game.”
In turn, the interviewer pointed out, “You do say that every time, though, so I do wonder if maybe it’ll just keep on going forever,” and next reminded Sakurai, “…including the DLC, you’ve been involved with Smash since the beginning.”
After joking about himself being a “Smash craftsman” Sakurai stated, “Well, DLC is coming to an end soon, too, y’know”. He went on to add that making the Smash games allows him to work on interesting things, and that he isn’t sure if his staff could make another installment on their own if he was to move on to something else.
What do you guys think? Will there be a new installment in the Smash saga, or is Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS the last time we see Nintendo’s favorite characters duking it out?
