Smash 3DS screenshot reveals mysterious new stage, Sakurai reminds us there is no story mode

Super Smash Bros. 4 - Mysterious 3DS Stage

Today’s Super Smash Bros. “pic of the day” may bring a bit of bad news to fans of Brawl‘s solo content. It has been confirmed before that there will be no story mode in the new Smash 4 games, but on Miiverse, series director Masahiro Sakurai reminds us again regarding the newest 3DS screenshot:

“Pic of the day. Where am I……??

To be clear, the new Super Smash Bros. games do not feature a story mode like The Subspace Emissary.”

He of course reiterates this because the screenshot above shows a stage we’ve never seen before. We know that the 3DS version of Smash 4 will include stages from 3DS games, but this doesn’t appear to fit with any other Nintendo portable title.

It could be that this is a stage based on an as-of-yet unreleased title. Or, in what seems to be a more likely scenario, this is the “separate mode from the standard versus play” Sakurai mentioned in last year’s Famitsu article. There may not be a story mode like Subspace Emissary, but there could still be a Target Practice, Race, Boss Rush mode–or something completely new. Thoughts?
