Masahiro Sakurai reaffirms that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC will end this year

All good things must come to an end, and for better or worse, that does include downloadable content for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In Nintendo’s recent “Mr. Sakurai Presents” video featuring Kazuya, Director Masahiro Sakurai, reaffirmed that the next fighter after Kazuya will be the final content release for Ultimate, making the game effectively complete.

Sakurai ruminated on the almost ten-year development cycle for Ultimate, stating that being able to bring all of these characters from so many different series together into a single product “meant a lot to [him].” Since the release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U /3DS, he says, “I’ve been working on this for a long time. You could call it my life’s work.”

With a development that long, it was bound to end sometime. Although no date was given, Sakurai stated that the next DLC character would be the last and will be available this year. “It seems the team will have to complete this project at home, right up until the end.”

The lineup for Fighter Pass Vol. 2 has been varied and hotly debated.

It is most likely a very bittersweet moment for not only Sakurai, but also fans. The fighter announcements have been staples of Nintendo Directs for almost three years now. Speculating on what characters would make it in, watching the reveal, and breathing a sigh of relief when your favorite character made it in were all part of the experience. However, with one fighter left, fans realize that it is hard to let go.
