New Smash Wii U screenshot: Link strikes Fox to reveal a new visual damage effect

In today’s screenshot from the daily updated Super Smash Bros. website, Toon Link is seen fighting Fox McCloud. Our green-garbed hero deals a punishing blow to our furry friend, causing an interesting new visual effect which turns out to be a new addition to the series. Series director Masahiro Sakurai explains on Miiverse (thanks Nintendo Everything for the translation):

“A red-black effect now appears when you’re hit by a strong blow. It’ll only appear when you have high damage, so when you see this you’re in trouble–and you’re probably about to get KO’d!”

So it seems Fox is only a second away from being launched into the deathly realm outside the stage’s borders. Well played, Link!
