Nintendo of America software engineer Nando Monterazo revealed through his Twitter page that Nintendo is working on a tablet for schools. The tablet won’t play core Nintendo games though; instead, Nintendo will be developing educational games for this new device. For all the details on Nintendo’s educational tablet, hit the jump!

Nando Monterazo tweeted this message regarding the Nintendo tablet:

“Experimenting with a tablet of Nintendo, the system is based on android, fully modified and unified as a database of the tablet. #Android

Nintendo is testing the tablet with the Android operating system, and although the tweet is unclear, it seems that Nintendo wants to have an operating system in place that runs in a Unix environment. Whether Nintendo is going to work on their own spin of Android, or if they end up writing a new operating system from scratch altogether remains to be seen. The tweet reads:

“Nintendo is testing only the “Android” but in fact she wants a system written in C/C++ in a Unix environment for the system single tablet!

Monterazo confirmed that games from Nintendo’s older consoles will not run on this tablet:

“Many people will be wondering if games “Nes”, “SNES” or “Game Boy” the tablet will not have these games, educational games only! #Tablet

Perhaps the most interesting tweet of all was the tweet from Monterazo stating that educational games will be developed for the tablet, and that they will include Nintendo characters. Perhaps Link will make an appearance?:

@Chris_Utah3DS @DeSero It is, a tablet with educational games for children with Nintendo characters….

Finally, it seems that the tablet won’t be available to the general public, at least initially. Monterazo emphasized that the tablet is developed for schools in mind:

@Chris_Utah3DS @DeSero …now the tablet is primarily focused for schools!! :-)

So there you have it; Nintendo is making a tablet, though it probably isn’t what most people expected. Perhaps this has something to do with Nintendo recently purchasing shares in Dwango Co., a mobile content company. It’ll be interesting to see if Nintendo’s push into the educational market has an impact on their business model, and whether the technology being put into the educational tablet will be utilized in any of their future consoles or handhelds.
