The Celebration of the Wild: We dedicate March to Breath of the Wild
by on March 3, 2018

Open your eyes.

Zelda fans have heard those three words a lot recently. They were the first words spoken in the first trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at E3 2016. They were also the last words spoken in the last trailer for Breath of the Wild. They are the first words spoken to every new player in the already best-selling title. One year ago today, we opened our eyes to one of Nintendo’s biggest games in their entire history.

And today, March 3, 2018, we celebrate the one-year anniversary of the release of Breath of the Wild.

I think it is fair to say that Breath of the Wild was the most anticipated new entry to the Zelda franchise since Twilight Princess, which was released in 2006. The now legendary response to the announcement trailer for Twilight Princess at E3 2004 seems mute when compared to the tidal waves of excitement that surrounded the release of Breath of the Wild and have continued to this day.

I also think it is fair to say that Breath of the Wild far exceeded even the highest expectations of this community. Eiji Aonuma warned that the game would challenge what we expected from a Zelda game, but who would have guessed that Breath of the Wild could become the single most important entry in the franchise since — or possibly including — Ocarina of Time?

While it is true that each Zelda game has a unique feature of its own, only a few games in the series stand out as truly changing the direction of the series. No game has changed the series has dramatically as Breath of the Wild since Ocarina of Time.

The adventure began a year ago, today. Where did you explore first?

So, how do we celebrate the anniversary of such a special event? Are a single day and a heartfelt article really enough?

We didn’t think so.

In the past, we used to dedicate the entire month of March to a short series of misunderstood and unappreciated Zelda games. (For the record, we here love all Zelda games, even those ones.) However, that no longer seems appropriate.

Instead, it seems only fitting that we dedicate the entire month to Breath of the Wild.

All of our teams have planned new content for this month. You can look forward to special features, columns, and new guides very soon. We also have some special announcements to look forward to as well.

Open your eyes. The Celebration of the Wild has begun!
