Yuga’s Art Gallery: Toon Link custom Nintendo 64 console

Some people might try to point out that Toon Link never made an appearance on the Nintendo 64. Some people might be annoying and trying to spoil what is a beautiful example of “Please, God, let me have this.”

I’ve never given it much thought, but the design of the N64 does offer modders a lot of flat real estate to work with. Apparently, CreativeBoxGaming, a console modder, did give it a lot of thought. He also gave it a lot of effort, and his design, the “Toon Link Custom N64 Console,” shows exactly how much effort it was. The detail, the textures, the sculpting, the colors, the modified figure — no part of this system exhibits any manner of shoddy work, which is a clear sign that this is the work of a pro.

What stands out the most to me about this mod is that it’s packed with details, but it is never overbearing. CreativeBoxGaming keeps to a single idea. It’s a grassy field with the Master Sword resting in a stone, and the added custom controller has some castle wall patterns: small medieval touches to make the entire display feel “Zelda-y.” He could have clustered the console with more characters, changes in terrain, and a wider color palette. Any of that would have been an injustice to the theme.

Link struts in a mostly empty field — doing what, I’m not sure, but it wouldn’t be complete without an appearance by him. Even the small cameo by Saria is a nice touch. I think that sums up the details well: This mod is full of nice touches. I especially like how the sides of the N64 are gold, grey, and brown, which pairs perfectly with the abundant green. And the added The Legend of Zelda logo and the Hylian text give it that extra dose of brand recognition.

I only wish CreativeBoxGaming was able to mass-produce this beauty. This is a one-of-a-kind, and it sold years ago. It’s my luck that I only discover it now, but I’m content with the chance to merely view it. Still, it’s something to add to my “Get rich so I can shell out a lot of money to buy these” list.
