The Nintendo Wii is a fantastic console. I can still remember the day when I got it, when me and my family played endless hours of Wii Sports. The system is also home to a plethora of exciting titles including the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Kirby: Return to Dreamland, and Super Mario Galaxy.
Modifying consoles is pretty popular nowadays, and there’s always someone out there working on a nifty little project. We’ve seen a fanmade portable Nintendo 64 in the past, so it is only fitting that the Wii would get similar treatment.
A new console mod has been developed by GingerOfMods, which combines the Game Boy Color design with the Nintendo Wii. The portable device is dubbed the WiiBoy Color, featuring a 480p screen with a control scheme similar to the DS Lite and Nintendo Switch. GingerOfMods has designed the device to utilize GameCube controls to emulate Wii Remote controls. The back of the console has a fan to cool down the system, and there are including Z buttons for certain games.
Adding games to the device is straightforward, as the console has a USB-C port for charging and connecting it to a PC. There’s also a headphone jack built-in which is extremely impressive. The WiiBoy Color will run for “two or three hours” according to GingerOfMods. You can even connect the WiiBoy Color to a television, just like the Nintendo Switch!
The amount of love and care put into this creation is very impressive. GingerOfMods has developed something truly special, and you can purchase one for yourself (though they note that it’ll cost you a “premium”).
