At long last Nintendo has revealed their next console, officially called “Nintendo Switch 2,” alongside a sneak peek at what is apparently a new Mario Kart title and a Nintendo Direct slated for April 2, 2025.
Sporting a slick new black design, the Nintendo Switch 2 introduces many new upgrades to its predecessor. Most obviously is the increased size of both the console and the Joy-Cons, much to the joy of everyone with hands too large for the original. In addition to the Joy-Con’s new size, they will attach to the main console through magnets, which should make them easier to remove and more sturdy when playing. Meanwhile, the console itself has some new upgrades like an improved kickstand and an additional USB-C port on top. The latter could open the door for many cool or useful accessories. Lastly, it was confirmed that most Nintendo Switch games, whether physical or digital, will be backwards compatible with the new console. Which games will make the jump, and if they will be upgraded has yet to be announced.

In terms of new software not much was shown, but there was a brief look at what looked like a brand-new Mario Kart game being developed for the Nintendo Switch 2. Mario and his friends are seen racing through a new desert-themed track and supporting updated models. We get a solid look at Mario in particular, who seems based on his renders from the Nintendo 64 era.
The trailer ends with the announcement of a Nintendo Direct on April 2nd of this year that will contain more information on the console and hopefully new games. Be sure to check out the trailer and join in on the hype for the new console!
