Let’s a-go! Mario Kart 8 has officially become the best selling racing game in the United States, ousting Mario Kart Wii from its years-long hold on the title. MK8 has sold 48.1 million units since its release.
Of course, this comes with a caveat. This is not only the sales for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch (33.41 million units), but it also includes the middling sales of Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U (8.45 million units). These numbers are based on sales data from December 31, 2020.
Mario Kart Wii sold 37.38 million units during its lifetime, so, in all fairness, it holds the title for the best selling individual racing game, but who’s counting?
