SGDQ 2024 hits milestone, shows historic Ocarina of Time “Ganonfloor” glitch

The charity speedrunning marathon Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ) has reached new records in several speedrunning categories in 2024, as well as a lifetime total achievement of raising over $50 million USD.

SGDQ 2024 raised a total amount of $2,546,290 USD for Doctors Without Borders, a nonprofit organization that sends critical emergency aid and medical care to war-torn and disaster stricken areas around the world. That total helped SGDQ reach an all-time record of raising over $50 million USD since its inception in 2011.

Several remarkable speedruns of various Zelda games took place during the event. Despite the setbacks, Glan charged forward in an All Dungeons Swordless run of A Link to the Past and came out at 1:13:06. Speedrunners gymnast86 and spikevegeta teamed up in a unique Co-op Randomizer run of Twilight Princess, clocking in at 3:08:51. And in a special $100,000 USD donation milestone presentation, dannyb demonstrated a Defeat Ganon no SRM run by utilizing a speedrunning trick newly discovered this year, called “Ganonfloor.” For over twelve years, the primary glitch that speedrunners used in this category was “Ganondoor,” which allowed players to warp from Inside the Great Deku Tree to the cutscene initiating the collapse of Ganon’s Tower. But “Ganonfloor” takes things a step further. Using a complicated string of tricks to overload sight, sound, and hitbox data from inside Dodongo’s Cavern, speedrunners can clip through the floor to warp straight to Ganon after the tower has collapsed and defeat him with little more than a Deku Stick!

Unfortunately one wrong move allowed Ganon to get the best of dannyb, but he ironically spawned at the “Ganondoor” spot and made his way back to the fight and defeat him anyway, clocking in at 23:20 and allowing enough time to explain the trick to the audience with plenty of entertainment. As dannyb and commentators goodgortho and adef frozonflygone emphasized, speedrunners can still make record time with “Ganonfloor” by taking shortcuts from Kokiri Forest to Dodongo’s Cavern. This groundbreaking discovery is literally a game changer for many speedrunning categories in Ocarina of Time, including the coveted Any%. That’s because the SRM glitch is infamous for warping straight to the credits, so most other categories still require contestants to actually fight and defeat Ganon. “Ganonfloor” allows that to happen. You can watch how the trick works in the video above.
