Last week, Tears of the Kingdom once again galloped head-to-head against the impressive game lineup from last year’s market at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’s Game Awards 2024. While Tears did not win the highly coveted Best Game Award, there was no reason to cry just yet. Tears nabbed (or should we say, Ultrahanded) the well-deserved Technical Achievement Award to its growing collection of accolades before the end of the evening. Zelda fans were delighted to hear the news, including Patricia Summersett, voice actor for Princess Zelda in Breath of the Wild, Age of Calamity, and Tears of the Kingdom. The game’s Nintendo sibling Super Mario Bros. Wonder also snagged two awards in the Family and Multiplayer categories.
BBC News provided live coverage of BAFTA in the United Kingdom. BBC apparently made an attempt to broadcast an interview with Matt Mercer, voice actor for Ganondorf in Tears of the Kingdom during the coverage, but the connection was interrupted.
Meanwhile, the Zelda staff shared the “secret sauce” of Tears of the Kingdom with a crowd of intrigued developers during the Game Developers’ Conference. Titled “Tunes of the Kingdom,” the hilarious and fascinating panel focused on how the Zelda team stumbled into a whole new method that not only prompts sounds, but creates new ones by combining several on its own. “Tunes of the Kingdom” is recorded and recently became available to the public. You can watch the video in its entirety on the GDC website here.
