Yuga’s Art Gallery: Too cute for words

My original draft of this article was literally just “HOW CUTE IS THIS?” over and over again, but my editors said that, while accurate, I actually need to write something about the piece. So, here’s my second draft.

We are all fans of cute things. Whether they be Koroks or kittens, adorable animals and creatures make the world go round. It’s the reason people have kids, they want some adorable little creature running around and saying cute things. It’s also one of the reasons we are Zelda fans. These games are chock full of animals and monsters that are just so stinkin’ cute. Heck, look at the Bokoblins! They squeak!

So, while browsing the Zelda Universe DeviantArt group, I came across something that literally made me squeak with delight.

DeviantArt user Kikis-Art-Journey brought together two of the cutest characters from The Legend of Zelda and, get this, they are napping on each other. I mean, come on. Anyway, here’s “Machi and Makar Napping“.

Do you remember that video from about a decade ago where the woman starts crying on a webcam saying that she wants to hug every cat? That’s kind of how I feel when I see this. It’s just so darn cute!

Editor’s Note: Zach, please, you need to actually talk about the artwork.

Okay, fine. The piece is very simple, it’s just Makar from The Wind Waker and Machi from Skyward Sword sitting by a log and napping. It’s a tranquil moment for these characters. I like to think that Makar is taking a bit of a break from his duties and Machi is resting after having to swim for so long. It’s one of those moments that the games can’t really focus on, so fans get to show a little bit of respite for them.

There is so much little detail in the work that you can tell there was a story leading up to this. The lighting of the piece makes it seem like they are deep in the forest, the sun peeking through the canopy, gently warming them as they take a little cat nap. Makar has his signature instrument and maybe has helped Machi fall asleep by playing them a lullaby. He’s also sitting on some rocks to give Machi a little more support while leaning against the log. Overall, it’s a really sweet piece of art that brings together two fun characters.
