In an interview with Fast Company, Nintendo’s president Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that Nintendo is “looking into” creating animations beyond the new Mario movie planned for 2022 with Illumination (the studio known most notably for its work on Despicable Me, The Lorax, and The Grinch), with the company eyeing its other franchises besides Mario.

The future of these projects will likely be determined by how well Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination’s upcoming Mario movie performs, which could potentially pave the way for movies or TV series for franchises like Zelda, Metroid, and Splatoon. Nintendo has produced animations of The Legend of Zelda and Mario in the past, so it will be interesting to see how Nintendo moves forward with future animations of its franchises.
