Deep, dark woods where you can easily get lost and that’s filled with various monsters, such as Moblins and Wolfos, sounds like the ideal setting for a horror movie. Add a forgotten mansion that’s haunted by four sisters and the image is complete. It’s not a place or a situation I think many of us would like to be in, but if we were, maybe it would feel a little better if there were hip hop beats around?
“Forest Temple” is a LoFi remix by Jokabi and GameChops featuring Mikel. This laid-back track is perfect for those of us who prefer to be served spookiness in smaller portions. I personally don’t watch horror movies if I don’t have to, or play any video games meant to frighten the player. The scarier elements in Zelda games are usually on a level I can handle. But the Forest Temple in Ocarina of Time was one of the scariest places I knew of when I was a kid, and its soundtrack made me never want to return to explore the dungeon properly.
The trio’s remix of the same track that frightened me as a child may not be so spooky anymore, but they’ve kept the hazy noises and rattling sounds to remind the listener that this song belongs to a haunted place. Their interpretation of the Forest Temple is just as captivating and hypnotic to listen to as the original, and the track sounds perhaps more mysterious than spooky. It takes me to another place, and this time, I don’t mind spending time there at all, on the contrary; I could stay at this LoFi version of the “Forest Temple” for hours.
