Tingle’s Maps: Temple of Time Ruins (Breath of the Wild)

Link has just emerged from the Shrine of Resurrection to a world filled with both ruin and wonder. Down the path is a familiar sight, perhaps not for Link, but for the player. An old, worn cathedral stands tall among the surrounding landscape. What else could it be but the Temple of Time?

Before entering the actual temple, a small building can be found in front of it. This building’s interior looks similar to the temple as it appears in Ocarina of Time, though severely weathered. A small set of stairs leading to the back of the building, similar to where the Door of Time stood, but there is no passageway to be found. On the floor of this particular structure, the insignia of Din is inscribed. Given there are other small structures surrounding the temple, perhaps these were extensions devoted to each goddess.

Surrounding this small shrine are parallel staircases leading up to the main cathedral. However, taking the left stairwell will show signs of a past invasion. Guardians are seen ascending the staircase before their inevitable demise. Perhaps they are to blame for the gaping holes in the ancient building, as there is not much left after the 100-year gap.

Greenery has sprouted from the temples floors and entire walls are missing from the sides of the building. Few pots remain scattered around as well as a few hidden treasures, but this once-sacred place was clearly desecrated long ago. The only thing remaining in its original condition is a statue of the goddess Hylia.

Using this statue, Hylia is able to speak with Link and reward him for all the trials he has overcome. For every four Spirit Orbs earned, she will grant him a Heart Container or more stamina to aid him on his journey. Until more of these scarce statues are found, this one will surely be visited more than once.

Breath of the Wild allows us to not only explore the interior of the structure, such as we could do in previous titles, but the exterior as well. If you are a rambunctious explorer, you may just try to claw your way up the walls of the building. Some, however, may prefer to use the outdoor ladder near the back of the temple.

The roof is tattered, appearing as though the remaining tiles may slide off at any moment. The bell tower remains intact, holding a treasure chest for those willing to make the climb up top. Climb even further to the steeples peak point, and not only will you find a stunning view, but a friend who has been waiting for you to find them.

The Temple of Time in Breath of the Wild is vastly different than any other before it. It is still a holy place, just like in Ocarina of Time, but the tragedy of Calamity Ganon’s attack has taken its toll, leaving a barely standing building. Though the structure may be withering to age, there is a beacon of hope that lingers within. So long as Hylia watches over the Temple of Time and aids Link through his trials, perhaps this temple will see new life again.
