Turns out that we aren’t the only ones who can’t believe it’s already been 21 years since the release of the original Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64.
In a quote-retweet of a Famitsu post, Smash developer Masahiro Sakurai seemed surprised that so much time has passed since his first foray into the fighting game genre. He says he isn’t very nostalgic for the old stages, mostly due to how recently he recreated them for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The experience of creating those stages is still fresh in his mind so there’s no need to be nostalgic yet!
With the recent announcement of Byleth as the fifth DLC character for Fighter Pass 1 of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the promise of all six upcoming Fighter Pass 2 characters releasing by December 2021, it’s unlikely that Sakurai will be leaving the world of Super Smash Bros. anytime soon. Considering the popularity of Super Smash Bros. and Sakurai’s own intentions to making this title the ultimate celebration of video games, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if Fighter Pass 2 wasn’t the last DLC we get for Smash Ultimate. Having a nice, round 100 fighters seems likely, don’t you think? In any case, Sakurai truly changed the landscape of gaming forever with this franchise, and here’s hoping that we get many more years with the Super Smash Bros. series.
