Smash Bros. Ultimate holds Melee tribute tournament

To ring in the new year, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has revealed an upcoming tourney event centered around the 2001 GameCube classic, Super Smash Bros. Melee. Characters introduced in that game such as Peach, Ganondorf and Marth are pushed to the forefront as the newest blockbuster Smash title celebrates one of its most beloved predecessors.

The online event, titled “Melee is Life,” runs from Jan. 3 through Jan. 6 and features a nostalgic return to characters, stages and items that debuted in the groundbreaking party fighter. Pichus, Roys and Young Links will flood the online scene this weekend as veteran players and newcomers alike enter a high-definition version of the world of Melee.

Melee is perhaps the most well-aged Smash game there is. The competitive and casual scenes are just as big as—and maybe even bigger than—they have ever been, and the GameCube controller is still a staple way to play for many Smashers. Ultimate just rounded off its first (very successful) year this December, and it is very likely that it too will go down as a revolutionary crowd-pleaser for decades to come.

Who will you be smashing as in this week’s tournament? I’m contractually obligated to cheer for Zelda players, but I wish all fighters good luck this weekend! Happy New Year!
