Aonuma: Future Zelda titles will be shaped by the “freedom” in Breath of the Wild

Breath of the Wild is widely considered to be one of the best titles in the entire Zelda series. Following a massively successful year, including winning the coveted ‘Game of the Year’ award, it begs the question, where will the series go from here? According to a recent interview with IGN, series producer Eiji Aonuma says he wants the games to retain the sense of freedom found in the latest entry.

Speaking with IGN’s Andrew Goldfarb, Mr. Aonuma said, “You know, I can’t speak to what other people, other companies will do in their own games, but I think for me, especially, just in terms of the Zelda series, the incredible freedom that this game offers, and how well that’s been received… to me, it means that freedom, that level of freedom is something that needs to be maintained in Zelda games going forward. My eyes have been opened to how important that is.”

Breath of the Wild director Hidemaro Fujibayashi added, “a big theme of this game was that there should be multiple answers, multiple methods, multiple ways of doing anything.” He went on to say that he has “many ideas” for the next game in the series, which was confirmed in development near the end of last year.
