Now I may not be much of a shipper, but I can’t help but have a soft spot for coupling Link and Zelda. I try not to post too much content related to it as it is a very disputable topic, but the minute I saw this artwork by DeviantArt user muse-kr, I was the one falling in love! It’s beautifully illustrated, an endearing subject, and overall captivating!
The interaction between Link and Zelda in this artwork is simply precious. You can see just by the look on Zelda’s face how comfortable and content she is with her hero and Link is so full of joy! The motion in Zelda’s hair and gown is stunning as well, and it really feels like the scene is coming alive. I even like that there is no background because the focus is on Link and Zelda, as it should be. Even if you aren’t a fan of the pairing, there is no denying that there is clear talent behind this piece.
This next paragraph goes into some spoiler territory, so if you have yet to complete the game I would skip to the last segment under the artwork.
In my playthrough of Breath of the Wild, I was lucky enough to obtain the memories almost completely in order, and in the first few memories, I recall being completely put off by Zelda. I wanted to like her, but the way she treated Link hurt me to watch. What was going on? This hadn’t been like any game before. However, as I collected more memories, she began to open up to Link and we saw why she was behaving in such a manner. It didn’t justify her actions, but it did explain them and allowed her to begin to change.
Little by little, Link and Zelda grew closer and my distress turned to adoration. The part that melted my heart was Kass’s final song to Link, where we find out that Zelda had loved Link all along. This artwork brings out those feelings I had when I heard this final lyric and what I would like to imagine as their “happily ever after”.
The interaction between Link and Zelda has always been one of my favorite parts of a Legend of Zelda game, and I hope to one day we see a scene just like this piece of art. Nintendo keeps pushing the boundaries of Link and Zelda’s unspoken relationship, and as we wait for more in the next game, we have beautiful artwork like this to fill in the gaps and bring a smile to our faces.
