We’ve already had indication that the Nintendo Switch had a pretty impressive launch across the globe, with the various regional offices of Nintendo proclaiming the launch as the most successful in the company’s history. This story has now been corroborated by official NPD figures that show the Nintendo Switch had the “biggest hardware launch for a Nintendo platform and the second biggest launch for any video game platform since 1995”, when NPD started tracking such figures.

The Switch shifted over 900,000 units throughout March — 31,000 more than Nintendo’s previous highest one-month seller, the Game Boy Advance. Both the grey and neon SKUs were the top two selling systems for the month. Breath of the Wild itself shifted over 900,000 physical copies in March, making it the top selling game franchise of all time in the adventure genre; outstripping the second place franchise Resident Evil by 54%.

In all, not a bad start considering March is a non-traditional month for console launches. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo can keep up the momentum going forward, but with the likes of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Arms, Splatoon Two, and Super Mario Odyssey all lined up for this year, the Switch is sitting rather pretty right now!
