On February 4, Nintendo recently published the Q&A Summary from their Financial Results Briefing for the fiscal year which ends in March 2025. Company President Shuntaro Furukawa answered plenty of questions about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 along with its predecessor the Switch.
It should come as no surprise that one of the first questions posed about the console was regarding pricing. Cumulative sales for Nintendo Switch have surpassed 150 million units since its launch in March 2017, many of which were purchased by first-time customers this past holiday season who may be wondering if they need to upgrade right away. Since Nintendo has a reputation for offering affordable consoles compared to its competitors and with the rise of inflation, the consideration of whether or not to upgrade may simply come down to the price point.
Furukawa stated:
We are aware that, in addition to how inflation is currently proceeding, the exchange rate environment has also changed significantly since around the time we launched Nintendo Switch in 2017. We also need to consider the price range that consumers expect for Nintendo products. We think a multifaceted consideration of these factors is needed when deciding on the price of a product. I cannot tell you a specific price for Nintendo Switch 2 at this time, but we are taking various factors into account.
He also noted that there are currently no plans to discount Nintendo Switch when Nintendo Switch 2 releases.
Historically, Nintendo has struggled to meet the initial demands of a console launch as many of us may have experienced ourselves. When questioned about their preparedness for the production demands, Furukawa assured that Nintendo intends to “meet as large a demand as possible.” More details about production are intended to be discussed later on this year once the new fiscal year begins.
The next major announcement for Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for April 2, 2025.
