Nintendo has finally announced the long-awaited release date for Four Swords on the Nintendo 3DS and DSi. It will be available for free in the 3DS and DSi shops between September 28, 2011 and February 20, 2012. Rather than being a direct port of the game that was released with the Gameboy Advance version of A Link to the Past, the anniversary edition has some new features. These include new stages, some of which are based on The Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past and Link’s Awakening. The multiplayer mode will be handled over wireless, with each player requiring their own copy of the game, but you can also play the game by yourself and have control over two Links.

Two new videos of this game have been released. One is a Japanese trailer for the game, and the other contains gameplay footage. Hit the jump to watch them!

  • The music in the Japanese trailer sounds awesome. :3

  • Z-MAN7

Dude this is too cool! I love the fact they included a single player mode.

    Also, 8-bit Hyrule FTW

    • Chozo Knight

We need Four Swords cave of ordeal level(s) and it will be perfect!

  • Callin

That's amazing! I wish the Link's Awakening portion was in color though. It looks so odd having a grayscale world with multicolored Links…

    • mcdude910

I think it's sort of nostalgic! I like the idea. It's like how they made the 8-Bit portion different.

  • zzz

    i want this so bad

  • Jason

Can this game be played online or only local wireless

    • Z-MAN7

local wireless only. I think that's why they included a single player option.

  • Keimori

This is so awesome! now i can finaly play it! it's been far too long!! 😀

  • YEAH

YES. ONE PLAYER MODE. FFFFFF-UCK YES. I couldn't play the original before because I didn't have anyone else who had the game to play with.

    • mcdude910

      I'm playing the world's smallest violin 😛

      • Keimori

Let me grab the universe’s largest violin and we can play an duet!

        • mcdude910

Well, to be honest, I was only able to play it because I was desperate enough and bought ALttP/FS for my friend for his birthday. Don't get me wrong, he still liked it, but I bought it so that I could say that I've played every Zelda game. Now the only task I have left is to complete every Zelda game (I still have LoZ & AoL to complete) before Skyward Sword is released.

          • [LOZ]MASTER

i already have completed them all :gameboy, gameboy, color ect..
i think its great that you have almost completed them:)

          • mcdude910

By all, you mean all 15, correct? LoZ, AoL, ALttP, LA, OoT, MM, OoS, OoA, FS, TWW, FSA, TMC, TP, PH, & ST? If so, then I applaud you, good sir. I still have the most difficult games to go. I'm more than halfway done with LoZ, but not too far into AoL.

  • FORRRRRRRRRR FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! yeah finaly telling the days 🙂

  • Necromancer

Finally! I've waiting for this game since it was announced, at they made a great effort to enhance the experience, and thanks God we will have a single player mode. Unfortunately DS and Lite owners can't play it, but we don't have to forget that it is free at least.

  • Poe Princess Mara

I can't wait! Then I'll have something to keep me entertained until SS comes out!

  • vgvgcfc

I wish there was a solid release date 🙁

    • zelda4ever

I think it means it will be offered between those two dates. 🙂

  • mario_master

For free. this is y i love Nintendo. never played fs but this looks like fun. now to wait for alttp remake in 3d

      Then alttp 😉

  • lololololol

New SS trailer + this = my day has been made.

So, let's recap what Nintendo has done for the 25 Anniversary of Zelda so far… For starters, they're doing a complete live Symphony of music from the series, they're about to release an entirely knew console game (Skyward Sword), they remade the most popular Zelda game (Ocarina of Time) for the most recent system, revamping it in every way. They are simply giving away the first two Zelda games (The Legend of Zelda & The Adventure of Link) in the Ambassador Program on the 3DS, they put one of the most popular Zelda hand-held games (Link's Awakening) on the 3DS Virtual Console, and now they're releasing the most previously-unplayable game (Four Swords) on the 3DS, revamped, with new nostalgic levels, and the ability to, not only play wireless, but also play alone. Not only that, but it's free! I love this series, I love Nintendo, AND I LOVE THE LEGEND OF ZELDA 25TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR!

      • Chozo Knight

agreed, It has been a very nice year to be a Zelda fan :DD

Although I fear MM3D will never come to fruition, haven't heard anything promising about it in a while and the hype for project Moonfall is dying out. 🙁

        • Sheiko

I would be interesting to see A Link to the Past and Minish cap for Ambassador and MM 3D just to end the anniversary

          • mcdude910

Of course I would, too, but even if MM3D was started now, it wouldn't be ready until at least next March or April. As for A Link to the Past and Minish Cap, that is very possible.

          • Chozo Knight

That would be awesome, all we would need then is the Oracle games and we would have every handheld and console zelda game before the Gamecube. That would make me happy.

        • mcdude910

I agree. But, just because Miyamoto hasn't said anything lately doesn't mean anything… I mean, come on, the guy's been pretty busy. Just read the my post you commented on. As for OpMf, yes, it is dying out, but say Miyamoto notices it in the future (as if he hasn't already noticed it), he'll still see that there are so many people on board with it. He asked for a fuss, and we gave him just that.

  • ovafaze

wonder if the 3ds version will be in 3D..I doubt it, but if Nintendo wants to add a pinch of sprinkles to this already delicious cupcake of a treat it wouldn't hurt.

  • Trolldad

I love how the 4th DS in the Japanese commercial was actually a 3DS

  • Merq

Yes! Finally I get to play this game! 😀 The new nostalgic levels look cool, I can't wait! What a great year for Zelda ^^ Now all I need is FSA and I will have played all Zelda games.

  • TheMaverickk

Out of curiosity…. when well these ads disappear on ZU?

I mean I can't be the only one who has these survey's pop up for Walmart servery's that take over the entire screen. They weren't there a month ago. I thought they would've been resolved sooner but they still come up, and you have to refresh and hope that it doesn't come back up on the page you are viewing.

  • matt17

This is gonna be the best Four Swords game ever (since the old ones are extinct from multiplayer)
Only thing is, It's rare to play with someone who knows wut the hell they're doing (at least in my case)

  • Chozo Knight

    Why is this so awesome?
    1) Nintendo is making one of the most un-played Zelda games available once more
    2) With the technology behind the DSi and 3DS, wireless linking makes set up easier and less constricting.
    3) The single player mode will allow those of us who don't know anyone else with a 3DS or DSi to still enjoy the game
    4) The new levels based off of The Legend of Zelda, Link's Awakening, and A Link to the Past are great and nostalgic
    5) It is FREE!

The only thing I might want to add is a cave of ordeals type thing where you and 3 friends can battle waves of oncoming enemies or clear progressively more difficult rooms full of enemies.
