A lot of major anniversaries have happened this year. Mario celebrated his anniversary only last year by taking a day off from his plumbing and saving the world. This year has several celebrations. The most notable would be The Legend of Zelda’s 25th anniversary! But we also had Metroid and Sonic the Hedgehog’s anniversaries as well. Yet another celebration takes place this year! The Super Nintendo Entertainment System officially launched in North America on August 19th, 1991!

Yes, the Super NES is celebrating 20 years of 16-bit fury!

This console first launched in Japan on November 21st, 1990 and in Europe on April 11th, 1992. But that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate 20 years in North America!

The Super NES definitely deserves a bit of recognition, wouldn’t you agree?

More after the jump!

North American SNES

PAL Version

The main point for the creation of this console was to compete with the newest in home consoles. This console did indeed compete very well, and won this competition for best seller.  The Super Nintendo Entertainment System was a global success and was the most popular, most revolutionary, and the greatest-selling console during the 16-bit era. The first shipment of the SNES was 300,000 units in Japan, which it sold out within hours!

When 32-bit consoles entered the ring, the SNES was still shining brightly through the console cavern of the world. That is until Nintendo of America production stopped in 1999. In Japan, production stopped a few years later, in 2003. This was not the end of the console’s life. The Super Nintendo Entertainment System will always be one of the most notable consoles in video game history for Nintendo.

For those who wish to celebrate this anniversary, leave a comment saying what your favorite SNES game is and why!
