A Link to the Past 3DS

In an interview with Edge Magazine yesterday, Zelda series creator and general producer Shigeru Miyamoto indicated that he has another Zelda 3DS remake up his sleeve. Or at least he intends on one.

“A Link to the Past. Do you remember Xevious? It’s two-layered and I really wanted to create that at the time. So to see Link To The Past in two layers would be quite attractive for me.”

More on this exciting possiblity after the jump!

Frankly, despite our quick research, we remain ignorant of this “two-layered” aspect Mr. Miyamoto is referring to regarding the Xevious videogame, and thus are not exactly certain how this would translate to a A Link to the Past remake, however, we may have confirmation on this potential remake from a much older piece of information.

Back in 2007 current producer of the Zelda series, Eiji Aounuma told Official Nintendo Magazine  that he would be very interested in doing a remake of A Link to the Past.

“The first Zelda game that I played and felt potential in was Link to the Past. I’m actually very interested in what it would be like if we remade that title as a 3D game.”

So which is it? A full remake of A Link to the Past in the 3D style of Ocarina of Time, or this mysterious “two-layered” notion Shigeru Miyamoto mentions? We can only wait and see.

Let us know what you think the “two-layered” idea is and what you’d like to see in a A Link to the Past remake in the comments below!

If that DID happen, it would be awesome. However, I'm not sure what the two-layered thing means. Oh, well. We'll find out at some point.

  • First!

    • Manga Ninja

      I agree a winwinwin!

  • VampzFelier

    That would be AMAZING!!

  • KingDodongo1

Oh my god, I didn't think it was possible to love this man anymore, but if they remake ALTTP in 3D… I mean, that's the first Zelda game I played, I can hardly even remember my first time playing it. It pretty much IS my childhood.

  • This game taught me to read. It's the game that made me fall in love with Zelda. The game that made me a hardcore gamer. My favorite game of all time. This would be awesome. Whether it was a 3D port or a full 3D remake. I don't care I'd die happy either way lol

  • I'd be glad to see anything happen! ALttP is one of my favorite Zelda games!

  • Becky

I'm probably in the minority but I'd prefer it if they left it alone.

Plus I don't want every zelda game for the 3DS to just be remakes :/

    • MoronOfTime

I get you, but ALTTP is an awesome game and it would look brilliant in 3D ^^

    • zoraluigi

I agree wholeheartedly. Go make Surreal Stretch already, Nintendo. The actual Stretch would look AWESOME in 3D. ( http://www.zeldauniverse.net/forums/future-zelda/… )

But you probably don't remember Surreal Stretch. It was an idea in the Future Zelda forum… one and a half years ago. :/

      • zoraluigi

Actually, three years and two months ago. I didn't look at the date when I put in the link…

  • Max

So if they remade LttP that'd make it the first time in several years that a non-OOT or non-WW design has been used for Zelda and Link?

    • Well no… Skyward Sword isn't WW graphics like most people say (without knowledge of graphics)

      • Max

Not graphics, Link's design. His appearance, and Zelda's too.

SS still has the OOT design. Blond bishie Link, just with more cell-shading.

  • Shadowknight1

A 3D version of Link to the Past?! That would be the best!!! As much as I love OoT, LttP was the first Zelda game I ever beat, and I love it to this day, and I would love to see it in 3D.

  • Coop

They need to make a Majora's Mask remake for 3DS first before a Link to the Past one. But still… awesome!

    • Zelda3607

I say ALttP 1st if ALttP wasn't used 1st to have a basic layout for zelda games who knows how different OOT mightve been

  • dingdong777

    2D GBA ALTTP in 3D 3DS?! CRAZY!!

I loved ALTTP so much when I was little, now it might be in 3D for the 3DS!!

    • I'm guessing you maybe didn't realise that ALttP was first on the SNES console lol ALttP was 2D so that only had one layer but if it was a 3-D and 3D (confusing eh?) game, it would have a full 3-D world and be able to have the characters go anywhere in that environment, with clouds etc… instead of the map moving with a 2-D character in the centre of the screen. Just my thoughts…

  • TheWeatherMan

Please let this happen. This was the first home console video game I've ever played. Seeing that environment in full 3D would just be mesmerizing, can you imagine after scaling Death Mountain, you're stuck starring at the Tower of Hera looking straight up at it going oh dear god. Better yet the Pyramid of Power in the dark world in full 3D, or Turtle Rock. Man seeing the Tower of Hera off in the distance with Hyrule castle right below it, when you're at Link's House or in the Swamp would just be fantastic. Just thinking about is making my mind melt.

Speaking of Link's house I wonder how they'd incorporate that in 3D would they make the adventure to the castle take longer? I mean it's literally right there or maybe they would just leave it alone and just let you dive straight into the adventure. I think that's what makes ALTTP so much fun it's straight adventure from start to finish no silly fetch quests like oh you have to get the sword and then you have to save up enough rupees to buy a shield. Nope it's take a lantern go find your uncle, get sword and shield from said uncle and start kicking ass.

    • It wouldn't be on a home console though because Wii is home console, 3DS is a handheld console lol

      • TheWeatherMan

It doesn't have to come to a home console. I own every version of ALTTP made, I'd by a 3DS just to play a 3D version of ALTTP. Honestly the scope of the two worlds in that game is really meant for 3D, don't get me wrong the 2D is awesome but seriously seeing that environment in 3D would just be absolutely incredible. And on the issue of the double layer thing, I really hope it's full 3D and not top down 3D with environments and buildings protruding out of the screen, it'd be cool but not worth the work to play the same ALTTP, however I'd probably still buy it.

  • Ash

I can't agree more with the poster above me. A 3D remake of A Link to the Past would rival OoT as one of the greatest video games ever created. Almost everything the series now uses originated from that game!

  • Siaarn

That would be the best thing ever, ALttP is atleast my third favourite game, next to MM and LA, it was the first Zelda game I really played when I was about 4-5, I'd love a remake.

  • Link368

Two-layered, may mean a 2D similar to the DS Pokemon.

  • Link

    Two-layered, what does that mean?
Anyway, we need a new 2D Zelda. The last true one was in 2005, Minish Cap. That was years ago.
But personally, I would LOVE to have ALttP in pure 3D like OoT ^^

    • Punnutty

Two layered : the floor is the first layer, the second floor, hill, or somthing you have to climb stairs to get to is the second layer.

  • Kumar

I think that "Two Layered" means that the hills, trees, mountains, bouncing rock, ect. will pop off the 3Ds, instead of making it more like a ocarina of time kind of 3D.. this is my opinion

    • I dunno good thought but 3-D graphics and 3D stereoscopy aren't the same 🙂

  • mario_master

it has to possibilities a 2d remake with better background and sprites (most likely). or a 3d game like oot (possible). in all truth i pick option to as more likely because they will want to pull off something good on the new console

  • Yet another Zelda game on the must get list! 😀

  • jwalraven

We have heard rumors about the Zelda 25th Anniversary stuff. Maybe this remake is a part of it.

  • Josiahinnc

Sadly my guess is it will be like Links Awakening 3D if they do it.

  • Dakota

2 layered. As in link to the past’s awesome 3d look even though it was a 2 dimensional game. The illusion of 3 dimensions by putting objects on “layers”. like being able to walk behind a tree and hide behind it instead of always being in front of it. A better example being when link would walk under a bridge. the bridge is on layer 2, link on layer 1 so link disapears under it. Seeing a bridge pop out on the 3ds in actual 3d would be amazing.

  • Quest_for_Glory

Link to the Past is awesome but, I think a remake of the first two games deserve them. Granted that BS Zelda has been done. There just games that need it most in my opinion.

  • This most likely will fall under the 3D Classics in the eShop.

  • Poe Princess Mara

While this is all very good, are Nintendo planning on making ANY original Zelda games for the 3DS?

    • Punnutty

I don't know but I agree I want something new not something I've already beat.

      • aaa

Don't buy if you don't like it.

        • Poe Princess Mara

I would buy it. I wasn't saying that because I don't like ALttP, I was saying it because the 3DS looks awesome and I'd really like to see what a new Zelda game would be like on there. Where YOU the one who marked me down?

  • Kargaroc

Maybe we will finally see Zelda 64 as it originally was! 😀

  • Greenwind

    WTF??? FTW!!!!!!
OMG!!! if this really comes out, it would be
super surpeise, really! I think ALTTP really deserves it, (besides been my favourite game),
It has a very good plot, very gos development, and everything..I wish if they made i, make an extra quest and add again the Palace of the Four Sword!!!

  • veeronic

now how awesome that would be aside,
    that picture makes me think…
expand on the gameplay, battles, etc, make it so a scene like that could actually happen in game.

  • chris

When Miyamoto says Xevious is two layered, he may be referring to the way the enemies are laid out in the level. There are ground enemies that can only be destroyed with your bombs and flying enemies that can only be destroyed with your guns. Trying to coordinate shooting at two layers of enemies with the right weapon is one of the main game dynamics. I have no idea how this would apply to Zelda.

You can play Xevious for free here and see what I mean: http://www.classicgamesarcade.com/game/21662/Xevi

Personally I'd rather see the main game remain 2d with added 3d enhancements and updated graphics. LttP is my favorite Zelda title; the aesthetics and world design alone is incredible. I'm not sure this would translate well into 3d.

  • I think the two layered thing refers to the light and dark world switch?

  • KingdomHearts

Will this game be in a 3d environment or is it in 2d with 3d graphics?.. Yeah you get the point !

  • Keith

god damn it, Nintendo. Can we have a NEW Zelda for the 3DS please?

    • Mina

The 3DS just came out just came out for Christ's sake, and this is only the 2nd remake announced (IF it's true and IF it even gets remade). Look at how many Zelda games we got for the DS; did we get them when the DS was first released? NO.

Stop bitching and actually GIVE. THEM. TIME.

  • zeldafan10

Me and my dad used to play this but most of the time
my dad had to help me. 😉 nintendo would rock if they did this make sure
they know they would make tons of $ if they did this :3

  • Harvey

You already are going to remake Ocarina Of Time. Then you plan to remake "A Link To The Past". That is awsome you should remake all of the Zelda games to be 3D and portable. I have the Ocarina Of Time N64 and I'd love to play it portable.I'd also like to play other Zelda games I have not played.

  • Was that a typo? :S

    • Darklink1996

I think it was a refrence to Smashtasm.

  • TheOwl

    WOOOW 😀 Aaah GREAT

  • mrnjlw1090

A Link to the Past as a full 3D game would be amazing. I always wished it would happen but it might not. I remember playing Xevious, and I believe "two-layered" means having the ground on one layer and having the enemies and Link on the layer above, but it looks like ALttP already does this.

  • I'm almost like crying over this news. A Link to the Past was my first Zelda game and I loved it. Now after playing Twilight Princess I look back on it and I see major differences from then until now. If they make A Link to the Past Ocarina of Time style 3D then they have to use Twilight Princess graphics because that game is so dark. And then they would have to change the 16-bit into orchestrated. I always wondered what the awesomeness of the Dark World would be like in 3D. THE WORLD WOULD HAVE PERFECT STRUCTURE FOR IT TO BE IN 3D! It's a pretty big world. NINTENDO RULES!

  • This might be what the 25th Anniversary is since Alttp was basically the start to the Zelda series.

  • Ray ray

A LINK TO THE PAST was the first zelda series game I ever played. I wasn't even 10 years old yet. i was hooked from there on out and now I'm 23 and love the legend of zelda series. I would love to see them make a remake of A LINK TO THE PAST for the 3DS.

  • SilverSkulltula

My first Zelda Game was A link to the Past… Alttp is So awesome a remake in either would be great i would be grateful for 3d. The Layered would have maybe a 3d element do you think that they could comprimise make Layerd overworld then dungeons are 3d I can't wait to find out

  • They would have to change some things in the game then, cause if we're talking a 3D Zelda game, it needs cutscenes.

    • Punnutty

Cutscenes, you're right every 3d 2d Zelda game ever since OOT N64 has had cutscenes.
P.S Who has two thumbs and does'nt give a crap ?

  • James

I wish I could buy a 3DS and the Zelda remakes… I love Zelda… I have since my Childhood…. ALTTP was the first one I played and I still boot it up on my old Original Modded PSP… I had OOT on my Wii but I had to sell the wii for a bill so yea lol… I really wish I could get a 3DS…. Man…. Memories….

    • Punnutty

Two words Game cube you can play almost every Zelda game on that but you will need the Gameboy player aswell to play ALTTP, Also the Gamboy player won't work on the WII and it should be cheaper than the WII.

      • James

I know that. I want to play what I have not played. I can play the old Zelda games on my Emulator on my PC.

  • Arcaedion

If they do. I want pink haired link back.

  • Shaelyn

is it a port with some 3D features or an actual 3D remake? I want the latter. I want to fall through several floors in a dungeon all on one screen. please, please do the latter.

  • UltimaHedgie

Honestly, to date LTTP is my favorite Zelda game… (TP second.) I would so TOTALLY love to see a 3D remake of this game! That would be epic.

  • Shaelyn

as it's been explained to me…with Xevious, there is a ground layer and a sky layer. you fly in the sky, you can drop bombs on the ground. there's some points in ALttP – Misery Mire comes to mind – where you have downstairs and upstairs on the floor you're on – or there's other points where you can see the 3rd floor below you if you're on the 4th floor. they're probably just going to give these instances more depth using the 3D features of the 3DS, but it's really going to just be a port – not a full 3D experience like OoT.

  • ZoraMikau

What is this two layered thing? It sounds interesting. Either one would be pretty cool for me. A link to the past….I got it on virtual console, and it's now one of my favorite Zelda games. The enemies would look interesting in 3D. You've got to wonder though. Is Nintendo out of ideas for the handheld Zelda department? Seeing OoT 3D, then the supposed LA re release for the eShop thing, and now this? It just makes me wonder what they have up their sleeve for the next original handheld Zelda game.

  • Josh

Can't wait until they actually make a NEW Zelda game for 3DS.

  • svenk91

It could be like the version they were working on for virtual boy. map, info etc. for one eye and the screen withe the gameplay for the other.

  • Kid Link 97

that would be totaly bad ass

  • I think the two layered thing refers to the light and dark world.

  • Dondongo

I believe what he meant was that Xevious contains two distinct "elevations" of graphics: one of the higher elevation including the playing portion of the viewing area (shooting)and one being the scrolling scenery (a highly detailed, geographic topography). In ALTTP, many maps contain distinct levels, or elevations, of which link has to climb up, jump down, or teleport to. This transititonal layering, as well as the patterend pits and black holes that one can fall into, can be emphasized with a 3D perspective, making the game ALTTP a great game to be phased into the 3DS library. ALTTP actually looks like it was made for the 3DS, or vice versa, heh.

  • adlez

    @ comment 22
actually, the last 2D was Spirit Tracks (2009)

  • starius65

wait. woah. its just a classic title game for the e-shop. dont get overexited.

  • #1 ZeldaFan EVAR!!!

It would come on the Nintendo eShop.
