Nintendo is a developer that often likes to hint about its works in progress, and unannounced Zelda games are no exception. With the Link’s Awakening remake for Nintendo Switch on the horizon, bits and pieces of new information are filtering through, but it appears many of us missed series producer Eiji Aonuma’s nod to the project back in 2016.

As discovered by Nintendo Insider, Aonuma teased the remake’s existence during an interview with Edge magazine:
“Actually, Nintendo has been telling me to create a new IP. But then, they’re also telling me to make more Zelda games … I can’t really share much; I’m not sure I’m allowed to say anything. But I really like the idea of a game where I can live as a thief. That’s all I’ll say.”

Aonuma confirmed the tease in an interview featured in this month’s issue of Edge. The “thief” reference can be attributed to the trick in the original Link’s Awakening that allows a player to steal from the shop in Mabe Village. Doing so will literally label Link a thief for the rest of the game. Whether or not you choose to be a thief in the remake, be sure to read up on everything we know so far before Link’s Awakening comes to Switch next month.
