Tingle’s Maps: Dodongo’s Cavern

Deep in the fiery belly of Ocarina of Time’s Death Mountain lies a subterranean labyrinth known as Dodongo’s Cavern. As the second dungeon on Link’s adventure, it not only serves as a challenge of puzzles and monsters, but as a narrative pivot in Link’s journey as a hero.

This dungeon is a labyrinthian cave system teeming with volcanic activity, centered around the ancient skeleton of a Dodongo. The architecture uses the volcanic theme to the fullest, using lava pits as natural obstacles for the Hero to overcome. There’s even lava waterfalls pouring down over a wall where two Lizalfos‘ are waiting, Fire Keeses can be found fluttering in the air. There several switches for Link to step onto, and cube-shaped block to push or climb. Despite the fire inspiration, everything isn’t colored red in this dungeon. The skull of a giant Dodongo at the entrance happens to look blue, and some of the walls are, intrestingly, green.

Being the newest introduced items around this time in the game, Flower Bombs and Bombs play a crucial role in this dungeon. The player must use Bombs to blow away boulders, reveal secreat passages, and defeat the many, hearty Dodongos protecting the caverns.

However, Dodongo’s Cavern is more than just a gauntlet of challenges. Initially, Link is clearing out Dodongo’s Cavern to win the trust of Darunia, the leader of the Gorons, who are on the brink of starvation due to Ganondorf’s misdeeds. At the end of the dungeon awaits King Dodongo in a circle-shaped room with a bubbling pool of lava in the center. Clearing the cavern symbolizes Link’s growth and acceptance into the Goron community, earning Link the Goron Ruby. It also emphasizes the theme of friendship and trust, as Link and Darunia solidify their bond in the “brotherhood ceremony.”

Dodongo’s Cavern, and many other dungeons in Ocarina of Time, manages to combine both challenging gameplay and unique narrative depth, reflecting the game’s broader themes of growth, challenge, and community.
