There is still so much we don’t know about the Zelda movie set to release next year. Will it adapt one of the games directly? What will the tone be like? Will Link speak and—if so, will it feel weird hearing him say long-form sentences? Eventually, we will know the answers to all of our questions but we may have gotten our first clue already on one of the film’s most important aspects: its music.
According to recent listings and industry speculation, composer John Paesano might be attached to the project, as well as Koji Kondo—the original Legend of Zelda series composer—collaborating as an advisor. Paesano is no stranger to video game related work as he’s the composer for the Marvel’s Spider-Man series of games. If so, his involvement would align with the film’s distribution under Sony Pictures Entertainment.
The film’s director, Wes Ball, has worked with Paesano in the past in projects such as The Maze Runner franchise as well as the most recent Planet of the Apes movie, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the latter of which was generally well received by audiences and critics, further strengthening his case for being the right fit for the adaptation.
Music has always been a defining element of the Legend of Zelda franchise, often being one of the key storytelling components in the games. It will be one of the most challenging elements to get right in a movie adaption. Striking the balance between honoring the series’ legacy and offering something new that can stand on its own is crucial when translating this to film and something that fans will surely be paying close attention to when the movie releases on May 7, 2027.
