Wes Ball, the director for the upcoming official Legend of Zelda movie, was recently interviewed with movie industry magazine Total Film regarding his thoughts about the latest Nintendo adaptation for the silver screen. Not everything is revealed until the Total Film issue hits the shelves on March 28, but thanks to the detective work of Games Radar we at least know that he feels very good about it.
“I have this awesome idea. I’ve been thinking about it for a long freakin’ time, of how cool a Zelda movie would be,” says Ball. “I want to fulfill people’s greatest desires. I know it’s important, this [Zelda] franchise, to people and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape.”
Fans have expressed mixed reactions since the live action official Zelda movie was made known to the public last fall. Many have been skeptical that such a movie would have the potential to express everything Hyrule has to offer in live action format, and prefer animation instead. Others, however, were comforted by Wes Ball’s confidence.
“I want to live in that world,” Ball continues, “That’s the thing I want to try to create – it’s got to feel like something real. Something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical.”
Wes Ball is an experienced movie director with a budding collection of blockbuster titles under his belt. He previously directed the film Maze Runner and more recently Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which releases in theaters May 10. It is important to note that Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, the creative father of The Legend of Zelda series, is personally producing the movie alongside Avi Arad and Wes Ball with Sony Pictures. Avi Arad is the former founder of Marvel Studios and currently runs his own independent studio Arad Productions as chairman today.
