Bombers’ Notebook: Wadatsumi

In Spirit Tracks, there are several Force Gems the player can collect to unlock new routes on the world map. These new routes can have a lot of different functions such as serving as pathways to secret locations, or as a shortcut around the world. Most of these Force Gems are rewarded as a result of side quests that Link can optionally complete, which includes several quests recieved from the residents of Papuchia Village, the primary settlement in the Ocean Realm of New Hyrule. One such resident of Papuchia Village is Wadatsumi, who has an interesting story with some other members of Papuchia Village.

Before the events of Spirit Tracks, several men of Papuchia Village were kindapped by pirates. This left the village defenseless, until Link shows up and starts bringing the people back to their homes. One such man who was stolen from Papuchia was Wadatsumi, a man who is extremely attracted to Orca, one of the village women. After saving Wadatsumi from the pirates, he asks Link to take him back to “his woman”, but upon arriving, Link discovers that Wadatsumi and Orca never had a relationship.

Poor guy.

Despite her disinterest in Wadatsumi, Link is able to ask Orca what her preference for a man is, since she is in the market for a husband. Unfortunately for Wadatasumi, that description does not match him at all. Link is actually able to hook Orca up with a husband; it just has to be a man that actually does fit her description of the perfect man. If you end up bringing Wadatsumi to Orca after you’ve already found her a husband, then the scene witnessed in Orca’s home is slightly more heated, as Wadatsumi is especially hurt that she has found love in his abscence.

Though this side quest is an easily missed one, I have always found it to be one of the funnier side quests available in the Zelda games. The way Wadatsumi so confidently declares he’s got a woman to go home to, only to return home and immediately get rejected. All the more devastating if she’s already been married at that point. There are a lot of side quests with comedic punchlines like this one, but Wadatsumi and his overconfidence has to be a personal favorite of mine.
