Zelda’s Study: The best secret in Twilight Princess of course involves Malo

Twilight Princess is full of interesting secrets and Easter eggs, but not all of them are made equal. Some are cryptic messages, others are rich with game lore, and others still are just really, really fun. This one with Malo would fall into that last category.

During the first segment of the game where you explore Ordon Village and learn the controls, one of your objectives is to learn how to use the Slingshot, which teaches you the basics of aiming. Once you have free reign to target the bullseyes around you, you can instead take aim at the Ordonian children.

If you fire at Beth, Talo, or Colin, the children will duck and appear frightened as the Pumpkin Seed ammo flies over their heads. Set your sights on young Malo, however, and it’s a very different story.

Fire at Malo, and he won’t duck. Instead, he takes the full force of the shot, with his head snapping back sharply before returning to its normal position. And the entire time, Malo neither makes a sound nor shows any sign of reacting. The little guy just tanks the point-blank hit.

This is perhaps the funniest thing you can do in Twilight Princess, and it occurs during the first 20 minutes of the game. It takes a while of playing the game to fully understand how much of an enigma Malo is. Luckily, the developers knew what he was all about, which is why they could work this secret into a part of the game where players would definitely not understand why Malo can do the things he can do.
