Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox give update on shared commitment to safer gaming

In a moment of unity across the gaming industry, Nintendo, Sony Interactive Entertainment (PlayStation), and Microsoft (Xbox) have released an updated joint statement reaffirming their commitment to safer gaming experiences for players around the world. First announced in 2020, this collaborative initiative aims to improve player safety — especially for children and vulnerable users — in an era where online gaming is more connected and social than ever.

The updated framework centers on three core pillars: Prevention, Partnership, and Responsibility. Under Prevention, all three companies say they’re focused on empowering both gamers and parents with intuitive tools and clear controls that help customize and manage gaming experiences. This includes making parental settings easier to find and use, promoting safety features across platforms, and ensuring transparency in community guidelines and terms of use.

Partnership reflects a broader industry effort. Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox plan to continue working with regulators, ratings bodies like the ESRB and PEGI, industry trade groups, and safety-focused organizations such as the Family Online Safety Institute and Thriving in Games Group. They also reiterated participation in cross-industry initiatives — including the Tech Coalition’s Lantern program — to tackle issues like online harassment and protect younger players through shared research and technology.

The final pillar, Responsibility, highlights accountability. The companies intend to maintain clear reporting systems for breaches of conduct, enforce rules consistently, and cooperate with law enforcement where appropriate. They assert that transparency, ethical data use, and proper enforcement — including restricting accounts for misconduct — are key to making digital play spaces as safe as possible.

This renewed pledge comes at a time when gaming continues to be a central form of entertainment for all age groups. By formalizing shared safety principles, Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox are signaling that player well-being remains a priority, even as titles and communities grow increasingly global and interconnected – especially as Nintendo starts to push towards more online gaming with the Switch 2.
