A new speedrunning trick was recently discovered in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, saving over two minutes in the Fire Temple. The method involves using the Hookshot item to perform an evolved version of a Hookshot Jump, a trick that shoots Link up into the air. A combination of three speedrunning techniques resulted in this find: Ledge Cancelling, Zombie Walking and of course, the Hookshot Jump.
This evolved version of a Hookshot Jump allows the player to retain control over Link even though he is technically dead. This involves using a bomb or some other lethal force while performing the jump, causing a delay in the trigger of Link’s dying animation. This animation will only trigger once he hits the ground. Once done, a fairy revives Link and it’s smooth sailing from there. By using all three, players were able to trigger the loading area in the Fire Temple that allowed them to get to the upper level.

It seems that this trick will become a staple in three main speedrun categories, Medallions/Stones/Trials, Fire Temple Individual Run and Nocturne RTA. For those who do not know, Nocturne RTA is a category that focuses on learning the Nocturne of Shadow song as quickly as possible after beating the Forest, Fire, and Water Temples.
At one point in time, an earlier version of this trick was only capable through TAS (Tool-Assisted Speedruns) but this new method makes it humanly possible to perform in its entirety. A player by the name of Amateseru already achieved two world records in the M/S/T category with it!

Seeing as the game is already 27 years old, it’s fascinating knowing that there are still new tricks being found! A special thanks goes out to dannyb, CountLG, Caidren, ZFG, Dotzo, Clyde Powers and all of the devoted members of the speedrunning community who helped this come to fruition.
