Speedrunner beats Link’s Awakening DX in 54:32 during Flame Fatales 2021

Have you ever woken up before your alarm went off? Well, the Wind Fish probably experienced that when speedrunner Astronumous beat Link’s Awakening DX in 54 minutes and 34 seconds.

Astronumous’ run for the GDQ event, Flame Fatales, is classified as an “any percent” and “no out of bounds” run of the game. This means that Astronumous cannot go more than a single tile out of bounds, and simply has to beat the final boss. However, just because she cannot go out of bounds does not mean the run is lacking impressive maneuvers. Almost every minute of the run contains a complex and impressive trick performed. This includes simpler things like a long jump all the way to the mind-bogglingly “Rooster Skip” that requires two frame-perfect inputs in a row. Well, the long jump is simple compared to the “Rooster Skip.” But then again, the writer of this article can’t even imagine performing either.

As someone who often struggles to beat a game, it is truly impressive to see an amazing speedrunner like Astronumous master a game to such perfection. The video is both informative to those interested in speedrunning and fun to watch in general because in less than an hour you can see someone beat Link’s Awakening! Oh, and hopefully we can all get more sleep than 54:34 tonight.
