Bombers’ Notebook: Lulu

Majora’s Mask‘s Lulu is pretty as a princess with her dangling earrings and short blue dress. She’s known as the lead singer of the Zora band The Indigo-Go’s and, confusingly enough, happens to have the same name as her late mother who also happened to be the band’s original singer. But when Link meets this talented young singer, she is strangely silent.

It’s not just Link she won’t respond to; even her fellow band member, Japas, can’t get her to respond when he speaks to her. Evan, the bandleader of the Indigo-Go’s, says he last saw her sighing and gazing at the Great Bay but contrary to the others, he actually knows why Lulu is acting so strange. It’s not that she wants to stay silent, it’s actually because she’s lost her voice. It all happened when she laid her eggs.

Lulu’s room can be found in Zora Hall and in it, her diary. If Link wears the Zora Mask he receives after trying to save Mikau, lead guitarist of the Indigo-Go’s, he gains the ability to read Zoran script and Lulu’s diary entries. Lulu details how she confided in Evan two days after she laid her eggs and lost her voice, and how she especially didn’t want Mikau to know. It’s not because she doesn’t like him, but rather that she was extremely worried that Mikau might do something rash and get into trouble.

In her diary, Lulu also documents her plans to follow Evan’s advice to bring the eggs to the Marine Research Lab and have them checked. However, she is ambushed by strangers trespassing in her room the following night and is unable to save her eggs from the thieves, despite putting up a fight. Embarrassed and saddened by her situation, she eventually tells Mikau everything that happened. He manages to cheer her up before he leaves to retrieve her eggs from the Gerudo Pirates who broke into her room, and it seems that Lulu knew Mikau quite well; in a rash confrontation, he gets himself seriously injured.

Meanwhile, everyone in Termina is preparing for the Carnival of Time and the Indigo-Go’s are booked to perform in Clock Town. Lulu’s eggs being stolen just days before the band is supposed to go on stage and start a show is quite an unfortunate situation. Fans in Zora Hall are wondering what is going on, and the band members are waiting for Lulu to become her old self again and for Mikau to return so they can get back to rehearsing. Luckily, Link seems to know the solution to this problem: retrieve Lulu’s eggs and, by doing so, get her voice back, so the band can start rehearsing again but without Mikau this time.

When Link manages to collect all seven of Lulu’s eggs back at the Marine Research Lab, they start to hatch. The newborn Zora children, looking like adorable little tadpoles, line up perfectly to the notes of “New Wave Bossa Nova” which Link immediately memorizes and later plays for Lulu. When he does, she miraculously starts to sing and awakens the Giant Turtle.

Not just anyone can awaken the Giant Turtle from its slumber. Lulu is likely the descendant of Zora protectors of Great Bay Temple, the location where the Giant Turtle will transport Link, and the “New Wave Bossa Nova” is the sweet tune which breaks his sleep. After Link completes Great Bay Temple and returns to Zora Hall, he finds that the Indigo-Go’s have already begun practicing for their Carnival of Time show. Lulu, with her voice reclaimed, explains how her late mother used to sing the same song to her as a child. But since it was a very long time ago, she had simply forgotten it and says that she believes her Zora children were born to remind her of it. If that is true, then maybe the melody truly is passed down through generations of Great Bay Temple protectors.

Lulu is aware that she’s put Mikau through a lot of trouble, but I don’t think she truly understands that he’s gone when she talks to Link, who is wearing the Zora Mask and has taken the appearance of the brave Zora. She convinces him that she’s feeling a lot better now, but I can’t help but worry how she and the rest of the band will feel when they realize that Mikau isn’t coming back. I’m sure they will be saddened and miss their guitarist but maybe everything will be alright in the end.
