Super Smash Bros. Ultimate gives enough representation to keep the most zealous Zelda fan satisfied. While I believe we’ve covered every single Smash Bros. stage, there is one location that has not been mentioned and I think is often forgotten about due to how simple it is. This was one of my favorite boss fights from the single-player content, the Ganon boss fight from Ocarina of Time.
Yes, you can relive the glorious final boss from Ocarina of Time, but this time with any of your favorite Nintendo characters. Ganon is one of the boss fights in the World of Light, a campaign mode similar to Subspace Emissary from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. However, this boss fight is also available as the final boss fight for any of the Zelda characters at the end of Classic Mode, a single player gauntlet run where the player plays several matches in a row.
This boss fight takes us back to Ocarina of Time, shortly after Ganondorf’s fortress has fallen. With everything lost, he uses the Triforce of Power to transform into his boorish, demonic form. Though in Ultimate this scene is reduced to only two dimensions, the stage still looks great. Ganon’s ruined fortress looms in the background and gives the stage lots of depth. We also see the magical flame barrier that Ganon put up around the climactic fight in Ocarina of Time; here it is curved, giving the illusion that it is surrounding the player, which I think is pretty cool. The fight goes pretty similar to how it does in the original game, with Ganon dual-wielding his giant blades, while the player can only damage him on his tail. Ganon does his wild, wide swings like he does in the original and he is given a few new moves too.
The developers of the Super Smash Bros. series show their care and love for all these beloved video game franchises in levels like this. This boss fight is rather short, but because of the attention to detail and how much it emulates the original game, it remains etched in my memory.
