Zelda’s Study: Grasshopper Link

Across the many Legend of Zelda titles, Link is given nicknames by several different characters. For example, Malon from Ocarina of Time refers to him as “fairy boy” and the Fishman from The Wind Waker refers to him as “small fry”. Some nicknames are more common than others, such as “Hero of Time” being used to describe Link from Ocarina of Time, but there is one nickname that happens to have been applied to two completely different Links. Both Romani from Majora’s Mask and Agitha from Twilight Princess refer to their respective Link as “Grasshopper”.

When Link first meets Romani in Majora’s Mask, she’ll quickly give Link the nickname Grasshopper because he, as she puts it, “prattles when he runs” and wears green. Romani lives on a ranch and likely spends a lot of time outdoors around bugs, which may have inspired her little nickname. However, she isn’t nearly as bug focused as the self-proclaimed Princess of Bugs, Agitha. If you speak to Agitha in Twilight Princess while wearing the Hero’s Clothes, she’ll say that she thought Link was a giant grasshopper! She’ll actually change the bug she calls him depending on the tunic he’s wearing, calling him jewel beetle should he be wearing the Zora Armor, and a scarab beetle if he’s wearing the Magic Armor.

Interestingly, in the original version of Twilight Princess, it’s normally impossible to trigger the dialogue where Agitha calls Link a scarab beetle. You need the Big Wallet to be able to afford the Magic Armor, which you can only obtain the from Agitha herself, thus making it impossible to meet her before getting the item. In Twilight Princess HD, however, it is possible to get the Big Wallet before meeting Agitha, unlocking the previously inaccessible dialogue.

While Agitha is less direct about referring to Link as Grasshopper, I do find it very cute that both Romani and Agitha see Link as a grasshopper. Although she doesn’t say it, maybe Agitha also thinks Link prattles when he runs, which contributed to her labeling him as a grasshopper, same as Romani. Either way, it’s gonna be hard for me to forget this little connection between these two girls from now on.
