Nintendo shadow drops Nintendo Music, a new streaming app for smart phones

Nintendo really said “We’ll make our own Spotify!” Yesterday, the company announced and released a new smartphone app called Nintendo Music. With this app, users can stream from a growing collection of soundtracks from your favorite Nintendo games. All you need is to download the app and have an existing Nintendo Switch Online membership.

There’s some surprisingly clever features in this app, too. You’ll have the ability to loop the music for upwards of an hour, create playlists, search by moods or characters, and even hide spoilers for games you haven’t beaten yet. It works incredibly well, and has everything you would expect from a music streaming app, including the ability to download songs. That’ll be helpful for data plan conscious folks.

Right now there’s roughly 24 albums to choose from, mostly centered on Switch games. Most the albums are fairly complete, including Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe‘s soundtracks. Some of them seem to be missing a few tracks, like Donkey Kong Country. With that game specifically, I would be willing to wager there’s a licensing issue somewhere with one of the composers. Which is sad, because Ice Cave Chant is a banger.

Zelda fans in particular will be happy to note the following soundtracks are currently available:

  • Breath of the Wild
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (for the Hyrule Course track)
  • Ocarina of Time

It feels like Nintendo is doing some work cleaning out fun little projects to help make sure that nothing is in the way of its inevitable reveal of the Switch’s successor. Still, this is a fun get, and it’s nice to have an official way to listen to Nintendo music on the go. Hopefully some more favorite tracks will be added soon.
