You may or may not have heard before, but you can now download this ever-popular streaming app for the Nintendo Switch. And no, we’re not going to mention the obvious pun. But what we will say is, Twitch can now be operated on a Nintendo console for the first time, allowing Switch users to watch their favorite streams live from the convenience of their console. Twitch streams can be watched in handheld mode and while the system is docked.
Like the YouTube app, there are a few caveats with using the Twitch app on the Switch. There is no configuration for streaming your own channel within the Switch version, just the ability to watch other channels. You will have to choose between watching the stream or the chatroom, not both at the same time. You won’t be able to engage with chat in a live stream, either, as you will have to be on a smartphone or a computer to use all of the regular Twitch features. With these padded handicaps in place, one may wonder, “What’s the point?”

These limitations could be a little frustrating to the hardcore gamer crowd, but a welcome addition for Switch owners with younger players in their households. Parents can turn the “noisy” chatroom off, for example, and simply watch their favorite streams with their families (like the Zelda Universe channel!). The ability to turn off the chatroom may also come in handy for those who enjoy leaving streams on while getting things done around the house. These thoughtful controls further support Nintendo’s vision of reaching out to casual players and family audiences. The Twitch app for Switch is rated “T for Teen” by the ESRB.
Long story short, this version of Twitch is a fun trinket to try for anyone who is curious and for families who enjoy streaming channels. But if you’re an avid gamer or Twitch streamer, it probably won’t fit your needs. If anything, the app will allow streamers the opportunity to reach out to a wider audience.
