According to the Nintendo Everything translation of Tears of the Kingdom: Masterworks, the recent Switch title was almost called “Tears of the Dragon”.
With the recent publication of The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom: Masterworks in Japan, fans have quickly translated many of the passages and interviews from the large book. One such interview was translated by the staff at Nintendo Everything and covered the development team’s thoughts about the game’s name.
Since the Light Dragon played a major role in the story they felt it would be natural to include it in the title, and even considered naming the game “Tears of the Dragon”. However, the team felt this particular name gave away too much about the story and returned to the drawing board. Eventually, the name Kingdom was thrown out and since they felt it was still connected to the dragon in a way, the rest was history.
While it makes sense the team didn’t want to give away too much, “Tears of the Dragon” is an amazing name. Check out the translation on Nintendo Everything for all the details.
