On August 18, 2024, Nintendo staff broadcasted a special 10-minute Direct update regarding the progress of the Nintendo Museum in Kyoto, Japan. Plans are going well, and the museum is scheduled to open very soon on October 2nd this year. The Direct is recorded and can be seen in its entirety here.
In the Direct, Mario and Zelda franchise founder Shigeru Miyamoto gives viewers a special tour in the new museum. He reveals that the building is actually remodeled from the original facility that produced Nintendo’s playing cards before the company entered the video game industry. Believe it or not, Nintendo is 135 years old!

Mr. Miyamoto showcases the first and second floors inside the museum. The first floor contains a giant electronic floor screen where participants can play classic Japanese card games virtually by interacting with the floor and their smartphones with a Nintendo Museum pass. The second floor contains more interactive games and historical exhibits of Nintendo’s toys and products over the decades, from card games to board games and even baby doll strollers. And of course, it contains a large room where you will find all of Nintendo’s video game consoles from the Famicom to the Switch, including early prototypes. Footage was not shown particularly for Zelda games but Mr. Miyamoto did mention that participants will see the evolution of popular Nintendo games as well, including Zelda games.
Near the end of the Direct, Mr. Miyamoto mentioned that the Nintendo Museum will also have a gift shop and cafe inside. Those who are making plans to travel there can go to the Nintendo Museum website for information, which is now live.
