Tears of the Kingdom approaches record breaking 2 million sales in Japan

Tears of the Kingdom is approaching another monumental sales landmark. According to a report by Famitsu Sales, Tears has sold 1,998,388 physical copies in Japan and is expected to surpass 2,000,000. It will become the second Zelda game ever to surpass 2,000,000 sales in Japan, after Breath of the Wild. Tears of the Kingdom has sold 20.61 million physical units worldwide.

Interestingly, Breath of the Wild continues to sell more than Tears of the Kingdom in weekly Japanese sales. In the most recent report, Breath of the Wild ranks 25th in weekly sales, while Tears ranks 29th. With 2,310,185 sales, it is the highest selling Zelda game in Japan, a record previously held by Ocarina of Time.

Nintendo also has recently published their results for the first quarter of the 2024/25 fiscal year. They reported a total of 143.42 million Nintendo Switch units sold, but also are reporting a 46.3% decline each year in total sales. Software sales are also down 41.3% from last year. Nintendo cites the decline from the previous year is due to the success of both Tears of the Kingdom and the Super Mario Movie, which both boosted the company’s sales. It is also possible sales are dropping due to anticipation of the Switch 2.
